Building a deep understanding of Victoria’s corrections system
We extend our thanks to the many individuals who have come forward and shared their experiences with us through the course of the Review. Across 50 focus groups, 160 confidential interviews, 449 individual submissions and 46 expert interviews, we have gathered a rich evidence base, and we are deep into analysing and synthesising everything we heard.
In parallel, we have been evaluating quantitative and qualitative data provided by the Department of Justice and Community Safety, the Victorian Ombudsman, IBAC and the Victorian Public Sector Commission, along with written submissions from diverse stakeholders, experts and advocates. Collectively, this data has created a crucial backdrop for understanding what is working in the system and what could change to create a safer environment for people living and working within Victoria’s prisons and correctional centres.
Extended deadline for our report to the Minister
In recognition of the breadth and complexity of the Review’s Terms of Reference, the time frame for delivery of our report to the Minister has been extended until December 2022. This extended time frame provides more time for us to carefully consider the diverse experiences shared with the Review and synthesise the evidence we have collected so far.
In the months ahead, we will continue drafting our report and consulting with stakeholders on our proposed reform directions.

Until our next update, stay safe and well.
